1½ c. boiling water
1 c. rolled oats
1 c. light brown sugar
1 c. white sugar
½ c. Crisco
1½ c. flour
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp soda
½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
1 tsp. cinnamon

Directions:
Directions:
Mix rolled oats and boiling water. Let cool.
Mix flour, soda, baking powder, cinnamon and salt.
Cream the sugar with Crisco and add eggs.
Mix well.
Add flour mixture a little at a time and beat well.
Add rolled oats mixture.
Bake in greased 9 x 13" pan at 350º for 35 minutes.
 

Oatmeal Cake Topping


Ingredients:  
Ingredients:  
3/4 stick butter
1 Tbsp milk
3/4 c. light brown sugar
1 c. chopped nuts
1 c. coconut

Directions:

Mix butter, sugar, and milk, boil 1 minute.
Add nuts and coconut and mix well.
Have ready when cake is done.
Put on cake and place under broiler till brown.

Grandma Verna Custer was the second wife of our Grandpap, Foster D. Custer Sr. She was a loving and kind woman who was an excellent cook. She came for Christmas long after Grandpap was gone, and was always a welcome addition to our celebrations.
