2 1/2 cups sifted all purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup shortening
1 1/4 cups firmly packed, brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
3 tbsp hot water

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º F.
Sift first 3 ingredients together. Set aside. Cream shortening, sugar and egg until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and water. Stir in dry ingredients.
Drop by teaspoonful, or roll into small balls, onto greased cookie sheet. Make a dent in center of each cookie, and fill with jelly or jam. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until brown.
