½ c. butter
1 c. brown sugar (either light or dark)
1 egg
1½ c. flour
½ tsp. baking soda
¼ tsp. salt
½ c. chopped nuts (I like walnuts or pecans)
½ tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter; add sugar, then egg and vanilla.
Sift dry ingredients together and add to butter mixture, blending well. Add nuts.
Mold dough into 2 rolls and wrap in waxed paper. Place in plastic bag. Put in icebox at least 24 hours.
Cut into thin slices, place on lightly greased cookie sheets, and bake 400º for about 6 minutes. Watch carefully, they burn easily!

Note: Dough may also be frozen. Thaw before slicing. This is an old Maryland recipe from a cookbook my grandmother gave me.
