"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

1.5 cup water
1 cup Crisco (don't substitute butter)

2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 t baking soda

1/2 t salt
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips

Directions:
In a small saucepan, boil raisins with water for 5 minutes. Let sit to cool then drain raisins, reserving 1 cup of raisin water. If there is less than 1 cup reserved raisin water, add tap water to total 1 cup. Refrigerate to cool quickly. I usually do this the night before.

Cream Crisco and sugar. Mix in eggs. Mix in cooled raisin water. Stir in cooled raisins and oatmeal. Set aside. In a separate bowl, mix together all dry ingredients. Fold dry ingredients into wet ingredients. Fold in nuts and chocolate chips.

Drop onto cookie sheet. Bake at 375º (has to be this temperature!!! do not use convection oven) for 10-12 minutes. Cool on cookie sheet for 10 minutes. Transfer to wire rack. Cool completely. Store in airtight container.

Recipe is easily (and usually) doubled.

This is Great Grandma Gorringe's famous recipe. They are called cookies but they are more like delicious little fruity, nutty, chocolatey spice cakes from heaven.
