"I have long believed that good food, good eating is all about risk. Whether we're talking about unpasteurized Stilton, raw oysters or working for organized crime 'associates,' food, for me, has always been an adventure."--Anthony Bourdain

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 c shortening
1 ¾ c sugar
2 eggs
1 c buttermilk
1 tsp baking soda dissolved in the buttermilk
4 c flour ( I add another ½ c flour to hold shape better with extra flour)
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
½ tsp nutmeg
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Chill dough for a couple hours or over night after mixing. Roll thick on floured surface and cut out. May sprinkle with colored sugar or leave plain and decorate with frosting and sprinkles after baking at 350 for approximately 13 minutes. Depends on size of shapes you cut out. If using sugar might wish to brush with beaten egg white first so sugar sticks and is shiny.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Deb Gray: This is my husband John's favorite Christmas cookie. He says they taste just like his Grandma Gray’s . Kids always love to help make these!
