½ c milk
3 Tbsp sugar
2 tsp salt
3 Tbsp shortening
1 ½ c warm water (105-115º)
1 pkg dry yeast
5 ½ c unsifted flour

Directions:
Directions:
Scald milk. Stir in sugar and shortening. Cool to lukewarm. Measure warm water into large bowl, stir in yeast until dissolved, add lukewarm milk mixture to it. Add 3 cup flour and beat until smooth. Add flour until no longer sticky, turn out onto floured board, knead until smooth and elastic (8-10 minutes). Form into smooth ball. Put in greased bowl, grease the top, cover and let rise in warm place until double in bulk, about an hour. Punch down, let rest for 15 minutes. FOR LOAVES: Divide dough in half and shape into loaves. Place into 2 bread pans (9x5x3), cover and let rise in warm place until double in bulk, approx. 1 hour. Bake in oven at 400º F about 30 minutes or until done. Remove from pans and cool. FOR BUNS: Shape into buns and cover and let rise in warm place until double in bulk, about 1 hour. Bake in oven about 30 mins or down. Remove from pans and cool.

Grandma showed me how to make this recipe and I wrote down the process as we made it. It is a little lean as when she showed me, she did so much by feel.
