1 1/2 c. chopped dates
1 1/2 c. boiling water
1 c. sugar
1 tbsp. shortening
1 egg
2 1/2 c. unsifted flour
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Put dates in the water and let stand until cool. Mix well.
Mix other ingredients in order of above.
Fill 4 greased cans (tomato) or 6 (campbell soup) a little more than half full.
Bake at 350 on bottom rack of own for 45 minutes. Take out of cans immediately. Let cool and wrap in foil.
