Ingredients:
Ingredients:
¾ cup shortening
½ cup butter (one stick)
1 cup confectioner sugar
1 egg
1½ teaspoon almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla
2½ cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
Red food coloring (Watkins makes one without red dye)

Mix in a food processor or crush the candy and mix in sugar:
½ cup peppermint candy like a candy cane or Starlight mints
½ cup sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Combine first 6 ingredients.
Mix in salt and flour.
Divide dough in half and add food coloring to one half.Warm dough rolls out better than chilled. I usually make this ahead and refrigerate until I get some helpers.
Scoop out 1 teaspoon of the red dough and roll into a worm shape. Now roll a white worm. Hold them in your hand next to each other and roll them together. Don't press too hard when rolling so they aren't too skinny. After the red and white are twisted together form into candy cane shape. They should be about 4 inches long like a worm. Sometimes they get too long so I make 2 cookies out of one roll.
Place on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Right after the cookies are removed from the oven sprinkle the candy/sugar mixture over the cookies. I put cookies on a cooling rack and put a piece of parchment under it.

I use to make these "all time seasonal favorites" with my mom when I was little.
Probably my favorite Christmas cookie!
