While you are packing the jars, place the water, vinegar, sugar and salt in kettle to boil. Wash quart jars. In each jar, put 1-2 heads of dill and about a half a small onion cut into chunks. Tightly pack pickles leaving about 2" at top. Some of the larger pickles cut before packing into jars. In the remaining space at the top, add more dill and the other half of the onion. Add in Alum. When brine is boiling, stir to make sure the sugar and salt are dissolved. Carefully ladel brine into jars leaving about ½" open. Wipe top of jar off, place lid and ring on top and tighten. Leave on counter to cool. Make sure they are sealed before storing. If they don't seal, the may be stored in refrigerator.
