Directions:Dissolve yeast in the 1/2 cup water; let yeast grow. Add 3 1/2 cups water to yeast; add approximately 5 cups of flour; beat until smooth, Set aside to raise for an hour or so.
Cream together: 1 cup sugar, 1 tbsp. salt, 1 cup Crisco, 2 eggs. Add to the yeast mixture and blend in about 7 cups flour--or enough to make a stiff dough. Turn out on floured surface and knead until light and velvety--not sticky to handle. Put in a well-greased bowl and let rise until double in bulk. When dough has risen, knead lightly again; cover and let rest 10 min.
Divide dough into 4 parts and shape into loaves (I make 2 plain and 2 cinnamon) Plain loaves: Divide each fourth into thirds; shape into a round (3 rounds per loaf). Cinnamon loaves; Roll dough into a 7x15 rectangle, sprinkle with 1-1/2 tsp. water (or spread sparingly with soft butter. Sprinkle with 1 cup white sugar and 2 tbsp. cinnamon. Roll up tightly--so no air is in the roll. Place in bread pan and brush with butter.
Cover; let loaves raise 1 to 1 1/2 hours. (Bread will continue to raise during baking).
Bake: 350º 30 total minutes. (If you want brown crust--turn oven up to 450º as soon as bread starts to brown).
Bubble Loaf: On the backside of Marvene's recipe is her FAMOUS bubble loaf recipe: Make into small balls--about 48. Dip into melted butter, brown sugar, white sugar cinnamon. Grease an angel food pan. Frosting: 1 lb. powdered sugar, 1/4 cup butter-melted, small amount of milk, and 1 tsp vanilla.
Note: I never made her bubble loaf...but Jan did--as one fine day she "stole" Marvene from our home to hers and they made bubble loaf! So...if you need any tips/information beyond the above, call Marvene at 1-800-HEAVEN. |

Notes: Whenever we went to Houston, Sid's Mother, Marvene, always made bread and we were known to steal a loaf and hide it in our suitcase! At Christmastime, Sid usually made his Mother's bread--ALL over the kitchen--and as the years went by, her recipe (paper) became more and more stained with water, flour, and cinnamon. So her recipe is now framed and safely preserved for generations to come!
Marvene made all the family wedding cakes! She designed each one specifically for the couple and carefully packed all the layers and decorations for the trip to the wedding. Sid's older brother, Larry, was always the "chosen one" who drove Marvene and RL to the wedding and he said that inevitably he ended up with bumps on his (bald) head for hitting a bump in the road or turning a corner too fast.
