1 c. flour (scant)
½ c. sugar (full)
pinch of salt
1 rounded tsp. baking powder
½ stick of butter
1 egg
milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Grease and flour a small round baking dish.
Whisk flour, sugar, salt and baking powder together in a bowl.
Cut butter into small pieces and work into dry ingredients by hand to make crumbs.
Crack the egg into a small measuring cup and scramble.
Add milk until egg + milk = ½ cup. Add vanilla and mix.
Pour liquid into dry ingredients and mix well with spatula.
Spoon into baking dish.
Bake at 350º for 25-30 minutes.

This recipe was passed down to me by my great grandmother, who would've learned it from her mother, making it well over 100 years old. Other than using an oven to bake it in, you do not use any modern appliances to make this recipe. Blending the butter into the dry ingredients by hand is messy but cathartic!

Everyone who tastes this shortcake says it is the best they've ever eaten. You can use the fruit of your choice (strawberries, blueberries, peaches) along with whipped cream on top. It's tradition in my family to also pour some milk over it and the texture of this shortcake stands up particularly well to the addition of milk. Enjoy!
