Cookies-
½ C butter (1 stick)
¼ C shortening (Crisco)
¾ C sugar
4 lge. eggs
3 C flour
5 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. salt
2 tsp. extract - anise, vanilla, lemon per your liking

Glaze-
3 Tbsp. milk
1½ C confectioners sugar
½ tsp. vanilla extract
Optional: food coloring to make colored glaze
Optional: nonpareils or sugar to top glaze

Sift flour, baking powder and salt together. Set aside.
Melt butter and shortening in a bowl in the microwave. Beat until well blended. Add sugar , mix well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well (1 min) in between. Mix in extract.
Add the flour mixture to the creamed mixture slowly, until well mixed. Dough should be soft, not sticky. (Add a bit of flour if sticky)
Roll dough in small balls (1½-2 inches) and put on ungreased cookie sheets.
Bake at 375º for 8-10 minutes. Bottoms should be lightly browned, but tops will be light.
Remove and cool on rack. Cool completely before glazing.

To glaze:
Mix milk, powdered sugar and vanilla extract (add few drops of food coloring here). Glaze should be thick to stick to cookie. Dip the top of each cookie into the glaze.
Sprinkle topping and let cookies dry completely.
