2 cups sugar
2 cups dates
2 cups chopped apples
2 1/2 cups boiling water
2 TSP cinnamon
1/2 TSP cloves
1/2 TSP alspice
1/2 TSP nutmeg
1/2 cup shortening

3 cups flour
2 TSP soda - little salt
1 egg
1 cup chopped nuts
1 jar red Manichino cherries
1 green jar cherries

Directions:

2 cups sugar
2 cups dates
2 cups chopped apples
2 1/2 cups boiling water
2 TSP cinnamon
1/2 TSP cloves
1/2 TSP alspice
1/2 TSP nutmeg
1/2 cup shortening

Boil above ingredients for 15 minutes. Let cool and add:

3 cups flour
2 TSP soda - little salt
1 egg
1 cup chopped nuts
1 jar red Manichino cherries
1 green jar cherries

Bake in moderate oven 1 hour. It is very good.

I personally don't like these sugared citrus fruits at all. Mother couldn't afford or didn't like them either. She made her fruit cakes a month or two ahead (of Christmas). She stored them with the apples and oranges. She made and sold lots. If I remember (correctly) she baked these in small containers that were round, square and oblong. -- Iola Salmen
