Harry Potter Shepherd's Pie Recipe

1½ lbs. ground beef
2 tbsp. vegetable oil
1 onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tbsp all purpose flour
1 cup chicken broth
2 tbsp tomato paste
1 carrot, peeled and diced
½ tsp. salt
½ tsp. pepper
3 large Idaho potatoes, peeled and cut into quarters
½ stick butter
½ c. half-and-half
1½ tsp. salt

1. Preheat oven to 350ºF
2. In large skillet, brown the meat. Drain fat, and transfer to a bowl and set aside.
3. Wipe out skillet with paper towel. Heat oil and onions in skillet over medium heat, until onions become golden brown. Add garlic, and cook for 1 more minute. Return meat to skillet, and combine.
4. Sprinkle four over meat mixture and stir. Slower stir in broth. Add tomato paste, carrots, ½ tsp. salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer. Cook until thick and bubbling; approximately 15 minutes.
5. In a saucepan, bring a pot of water to a boil. Cook chopped potatoes about 20 minutes. Drain potatoes, and return to pot.
6. Add butter, half-and-half, remaining salt, and mash together using a potato masher.
7. Pour meat mixture into a deep 13x9 baking dish. Spoon potatoes on top. Bake 45 minutes; until bubbling around edges, and crust turns deep yellow.
