Ingredients: Dough 1 finely grated rind of 1 orange ½ lbs. of Crisco 1 cup of milk 1 oz. of orange juice ½ lbs. of softened slightly salted butter 2 cups of granulated sugar 3 eggs 1 jigger brandy 1 cup of vegetable oil ⅛ tsp of cinnamon ⅛tsp of nutmeg 4 tsp of baking powder 3 lbs. Gold Medal Flour 1 cup finely chopped walnuts
Syryp: 3 cups of sugar 6 cups of water 3 tsp of lemon juice 1 cup of honey

Directions:Cream butter, Crisco and oil together. Cream in milk. Cream in sugar. Cream in rind. Add egg one at a time until fully incorporated. Add in orange juice, and alcohol until it becomes a fluffy batter. Add cinnamon, nutmeg and baking powder and mix thoroughly. Turn dough onto counter top and knead flour in by hand. Add chopped walnuts. Mix until dough separates from bowl. Separate into small tear drop shaped pieces and bake for 20-30 minutes at 350ºF or until golden brown.
Remove from oven and allow to cool completely. For syrup, mix water and sugar and boil slowly for 2 hours. Add lemon juice and honey and boil for another 30 minutes. Dip cooled pieces into syrup. Roll in chopped walnuts. Pile into a pyramid shape and pour the left over syrup over. |
