Ingredients: Filling ingredients 1 lb box of dates, chopped 1 1/2 C sugar 1 1/2 C water 1/2 C chopped nuts
Dough ingredients 1 C soft shortening 2 C brown sugar (packed) 2 eggs 1/2 C water 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp salt 1 tsp soda 1/8 tsp cinnamon 4 1/2 C flour

Directions:Filling Cook the dates, sugar and water until thick. Add the nuts. Cook the filling ahead, and divide into two equal jars. May be kept in the refrigerator a month. It takes 1 jar for this recipe of dough.
On well oiled cookie sheet, drop 1 tsp of dough, top with 1/2 tsp of filling, & top with 1/2 tsp of dough.
Bake in 400º oven 10 to 12 minutes, or until light brown. |

Notes: This is my maternal Grandmother’s recipe. Best cookies from my childhood. The recipe above came from a card in her own hand. I added nothing to her words. I must admit I have never made this recipe, though I want to. My wife doesn’t like dates. If I were to do it, I would probably substitute butter for the shortening. I would cream the butter and sugar, add the eggs and beat them, and add the water and vanilla. I would mix the dry ingredients and add them to the wet ingredients.
On the card in someone else’s hand, the time is written as 8 minutes. A modern oven is probably more accurate, so your time may vary. The number of cookies made above is also in someone else’s hand, and blew that is written 6 1/2 and 7, so who knows?
