Filling ingredients
1 lb box of dates, chopped
1 1/2 C sugar
1 1/2 C water
1/2 C chopped nuts

Dough ingredients
1 C soft shortening
2 C brown sugar (packed)
2 eggs
1/2 C water
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp salt
1 tsp soda
1/8 tsp cinnamon
4 1/2 C flour

Filling
Cook the dates, sugar and water until thick. Add the nuts. Cook the filling ahead, and divide into two equal jars. May be kept in the refrigerator a month. It takes 1 jar for this recipe of dough.

On well oiled cookie sheet, drop 1 tsp of dough, top with 1/2 tsp of filling, & top with 1/2 tsp of dough.

Bake in 400º oven 10 to 12 minutes, or until light brown.

This is my maternal Grandmother’s recipe. Best cookies from my childhood. The recipe above came from a card in her own hand. I added nothing to her words. I must admit I have never made this recipe, though I want to. My wife doesn’t like dates. If I were to do it, I would probably substitute butter for the shortening. I would cream the butter and sugar, add the eggs and beat them, and add the water and vanilla. I would mix the dry ingredients and add them to the wet ingredients.

On the card in someone else’s hand, the time is written as 8 minutes. A modern oven is probably more accurate, so your time may vary. The number of cookies made above is also in someone else’s hand, and blew that is written 6 1/2 and 7, so who knows?
