Ingredients: 1 cup grandulated sugar 1 cup brown sugar 1 1/2 cups crisco & margarine (half of each) 3 eggs 1 t. soda 5 cups flour 1 t. salt 1 1/2 t. vanilla
Filling 1# dates, pitted and cut into pieces 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup water or orange juice (Grandma used OJ) 1/2 t. grated orange rind
1/2 cup walnut pieces.

Directions:Bake 375 10-12 minutes Yield 9 dozen
Filling: Blend and cook, stirring constantly until mixture thickens. Cool add 1 t. vanilla and 1/2 walnut meats. Ready to spread on cookie dough.
Dough Cream the shortening and butter, add the sugars gradually and add well beaten eggs and vanilla, Mix and sift flour soda and salt and gradually add to first mixture. Place in a bowl and let stand in regrigerator till cool. Divide in half. Roll each piece of dough on waxed paper or parchment paper into a rectangle about 11 x 9" (1/4" thick) Spread rectangle with Date-Nut filling. Roll up tightly, beginning a wide side. Pinch edges to seal at end. Wrap each roll in waxed paper and chill several hours till hard (may freeze) Cut in 1/4" slices and bake 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned |
