2 c. brown sugar
¾ c. shortening
2 c. strong coffee
1 lb. raisins
1 lb. currants
1 lb. dates, chopped
1½ c. nutmeats
½ c. gumdrops (optional)
½ c. syrup
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 eggs
2 tsp. soda
½ tsp. salt
4 c. flour

Directions:
Directions:
Combine brown sugar, shortening, coffee, raisins, currants, dates, nutmeats, gumdrops, dark syrup and cinnamon. Boil mixture for ten minutes. Allow mixture to cool completely (overnight). Beat eggs and add to boiled mixture. Sift soda, flour and salt together; add to above mixture and blend well. Grease and flour bottom of 2 loaf pans (not sides). Pour mixture into pans and bake at 325º for 1 hour. During the first 30 minutes, set a pan of water in the oven to prevent hard crust on cake.

Vague memories of this as a small child. I know some of my first cousins make it. Still think it’s kind of fun with the gumdrops.
