Directions:
To start, you need 1-1/2 cups starter from a friend. This recipe makes 3 cakes.

Put starter into a 5 qt. ice cream pail. Add 1 can of cut up sliced peaches with juice and 2-1/2 cups sugar. Stir vigorously for 1 minute, and cover lightly. Stir each day for 10 days.

On the 10th day, add 1 can of chunk pineapple with juice, and 2-1/2 cups sugar. Stir vigorously for 1 minute. Keep covered lightly and stir each day for 10 days.

On the 20th day, add 1 can of fruit cocktail, 1-10 oz. jar of maraschino cherries with juice and 2-1/2 cups of sugar. Stir vigorously for 1 minute. Keep covered lightly and stir each day for 10 days.

On the 30th day, drain the fruit saving the syrup juice. Divide the drained fruit into three parts. Divide the juice into 1-1/2 cups jars and put in the freezer to use again or give to a friend (pint jars work nicely).

To bake cake:
In a mixing bowl, put 1 box of yellow or white cake mix (without the pudding). Add 1/3 of the drained fruit, 2 eggs, 2/3 cup of oil, 1 cup chopped nuts and 1 package of instant vanilla pudding. Start with the dry ingredients first, then add the others. Batter will be very stiff so you may want to mix it with a wooden spoon or something sturdy. Spoon batter into a greased and floured Bundt pan. Loaf pans may also be used. Bake for 50 minutes at 350º. Leave cakes in the pan at least 15-20 minutes before taking out of pan.

Cakes can be frozen or stored in covered containers. If eaten within a reasonable time, they do not have to be refrigerated.

TIPS: Tape a 30-day calendar to the lid of the container. Cross off each day that you stir the starter and fruit mixture.
