5 cups unsifted all purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 Tbsp. baking powder
1 Tbsp. salt
1 cup shortening
½ cup butter

Cookies
2½ cups Basic Cookie Mix
¼ cup sour cream
¼ cup finely chopped, well drained maraschino cherries
1 cup chocolate chips
30 maraschino cherry halves, well drained

Cookie mix: Combine flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Add shortening and butter, cut in with pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal. Store in airtight container in refrigerator until ready to use. This makes about 11 cups or a little over 4 batches of cookies.
Cookies: Stir cookie mix, sour cream, chopped cherries and chocolate chips in a large bowl. Shape mixture into 1 in balls and place on a greased cookie sheet. Garnish each with a cherry half. Bake at 375º for 8-10 minute. Cool.

This is a winner for Christmas cookie swaps. If you are just making for the family you might want to halve the basic cookie mix. One batch of the cherry mix makes 2 1/2 dozen cookies. Save yourself some time by buying cherry halves in a jar vs the whole cherries.
