"As viscous as motor oil swirled in a swamp, redolent of burnt bell peppers nested in by incontinent mice and a finish reminiscent of the dregs of a stale can of Coca-Cola that someone has been using as an ashtray. Not a bad drink, though."--Excerpt from "The Moose Turd Wine Tasting" by T. A. Nonymous

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 c sugar
1/2 -3/4 c molasses
1 c shortening
1 egg
1-2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp nutmeg
4 c flour
1 tsp baking soda dissolved in 3 Tbsp hot water
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp ground ginger

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening well, then add sugar, molasses, egg and cream until well mixed. Mix dry ingredients together, then add in batches to wet mixture. Add vanilla and baking soda mixture half way through this process.
If you want to make a crinkle cookie you can roll a large teaspoon of mixture into a ball, roll in sugar, press down, then bake in oven at 350 degrees for about 8 minutes.
If you want to cut into shapes, put mixture in fridge for about an hour, then roll out and cut into shapes and bake.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Granny would make them into hearts, diamonds, clover and spades shapes, then stick together with apple or grape jelly once they have cooled. When doing it this way they are best if slightly undercooked. If using to make gingerbread men or others for decorating cook a bit longer so they will be crisper.
Granny made these best, but Mike's are a close second. That makes mine third.
To make it vegan just skip the egg and use 1/4 cup aqua faba (chick pea liquid). Tastes great but the cookie is a bit softer than regular version
