1 c sugar
3/4 c vegetable shortening
1/4 c light molasses
1 egg
2 c flour
2 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp ground cardomom
1/4 tsp salt
granulated sugar

Directions:
HEAT oven to 350°F. In large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup sugar, the shortening, molasses and egg. Beat at medium speed of electric mixer until well blended. Add flour, baking soda, cin-namon, ginger, cloves, cardamom an salt. Bead at low speed until soft dough forms.
SHAPE dough into 1-inch balls. Roll balls in granulated sugar. Place balls 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 8-12 minutes, or until set. Cool completely before storing. Makes 6 dozen cookies.
