Directions: |
Directions:Mix yeast and 1/2 tsp. sugar into lukewarm water. Allow to raise, approximately 10 minutes.
Mix dry ingredients together except raisins. Make well into dry mixture and add raised yeast solution and the additional water. Add raisins to well- mixed dough. Dough should be slightly sticky and you should be able to drop batter from a spoon.
Let rise until double in size.
When batter has risen, heat oil in a large fry pan until boiling. You'll need enough oil to cover cookie dough when immersed. On the side, prepare a plate sprinkled with sugar to roll cookies in after frying.
Drop spoons-full of dough in hot oil. Fry like doughnuts, turning when necessary until browned. Cook long enough so insides are not still doughy. If oil gets too hot, turn heat down a bit. Take out of fry pay when done and roll in sugar.
These are really best when served warm. |

Notes: I remember going to Aunt Flora's home on Christmas Eve as a family (Grandpa Zuech included). When we got there Flora was already frying her Ola Cookies in the kitchen and serving them as they were removed from the fry pan. I know that's what I always looked forward to!
Some years later, after we no longer went to Aunt Flora's for Christmas Eve, I remember Mom making Flora's recipe at her house on Christmas Eve. I would help her and the thing that sticks out in my memory is the constant rising of the dough as we were frying. It seemed like we would never empty out the bowl of dough. That's why I have no idea the number of servings to say this would make. I remember it was LOTS! Make it yourself and see how your family reacts.
