2/3 cup shortening
2 2/3 cup sugar
4 eggs
1 can pumpkin (15 oz.)
2/3 cup water
3 1/3 cup flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cloves
2/3 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
2/3 cup chopped dates (optional)

Directions:

Cream shortening and sugar thoroughly. Add eggs, pumpkin and water. Blend in dry ingredients; then stir in nuts and dates. Band pans on counter a few times to release any air bubbles.

Bake in two greased 9" x 5" loaf pans at 350 degrees for 65-75 minutes. Cool on wire rack for 10 minutes then shake to loosen from pan. Cut into slices when completely cool.

Spread with thin butter frosting and sprinkle with mace or nutmeg or may be served plain.

Grandma (Beverly Speck) made pumpkin bread for every special occasion and regularly when her grandkids were in college and Grandma attended one of their games. All the teammates would always look forward to those games and enjoying Grandma's pumpkin bread as well. It usually didn't survive beyond the bus ride back to school.
