Witch's Fingers Recipe

1 c butter, softened
1 c icing sugar
1 egg
1 tsp almond extract
1 tsp vanilla
2 3/4 c flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
3/4 c whole blanched almonds
1 tube red decorator gel
cocoa if desired to "age" the knuckles

Directions:
Directions:
1- in bowl beat together butter, sugar, egg and extracts
2- add the flour, baking powder and salt.
3- cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes
4- Preheat oven to 325º
5- working with 1/4 of the dough at a time, keep rest in fridge
6- roll heaping tsp into finger shape, tapering one end for finger tip, and pinching slightly above and below where knuckles would be to create the knobby knuckles
7- use paring knife to make small slashes where knuckle lines are
8- firmly press almond down and back into tip to create nail.
9- place on lightly greased sheet and bake for 18-22 minutes till just pale golden
10- let cool for 3 minutes. lift up almond and squeeze gel under into bed of nail. replace nail to create oozing blood effect
11- let cool on racks.
12- optionally you can dust knuckles with cocoa powder to make fingers look dingy and old.

I have made these cookies since I found the recipe in the Star Phoenix when you kids were all very little. They have been a Halloween highlight ever since - going to many schools, parties, offices and friends homes. Those who can stomach eating a finger really enjoy the taste of these!
