½ cup shortening
½ cup peanut butter
½ cup sugar
½ cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 egg
2 tbsp milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 ¾ c flour
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt

Cream together the shortening and peanut butter. Gradually add the white and brown sugar, creaming well. Add egg, milk and vanilla. Blend in the dry ingredients (flour, soda and salt), mixing thoroughly. Shape into balls about the size of a small walnut, roll in white sugar, place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 375º for about 8 minutes. Do not overbake. The cookie will start to crack but still be quite soft to the touch. It should not brown. At this point, remove from oven and, working quickly, place a chocolate star on each cookie pressing down so the cookie cracks around the edges. Return to oven for about 30 seconds in a gas oven and a little longer with an electric oven. The chocolate star will get shiny but retain its shape. Allow to cool and, in the process, the star will firm up. Store in covered container.
