4 cups flour sifted
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp mace (This is a spice that is a combo of cinnamon and pepper. I would use nutmeg)
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
1 1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp soda (baking soda)
2 T spry (Crisco)
3/4 cup sugar
4 egg yolks beaten
1 cup thick sour milk ( I have no clue what this would be)

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, spices, salt, soda, and cream of tartar 3 times
Cream Crisco and sugar until well blended
Add egg yolks and mix well
Add milk and mix thoroughly.
Add sifted dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
Roll dough on floured board to 3/8 inch thickness
Let dough stand 20 min
Softly don't handle (LOL)
Cut with 3 inch doughnut cutter
Fry in deep hot Crisco 375 degrees until brown, turning when first crack appears (typing this as it's written LOL)
Drain on absorbent paper (paper towels)
Makes 2 dozen
If sweet milk is used omit soda and cream of tartar
Sprinkle with baking powder (I'm sure that she meant powdered sugar!!)
