5 medium green tomatoes
3/4 teaspoon salt
a few dashes of pepper
1/3 cup flour
1/3 cup corn meal

Directions:
Directions:
Select firm tomatoes. Wash. Remove stem end, blossom scars,and cut into 1/2 inch crosswise slices. Mix flour, meal, salt, and pepper; dipboth sides of tomatoes, fully covered into mixture. Heat shortening into skillet until sizzling hot. Put in tomatoes and cook rather quickly until browned on the underside, then turn tomatoes carefully. Reduce heat and cook until thoughly hot and soft through center. Remove from skillet to heated platter and serve pipping hot.
