Grandma's Pea Soup with dumpling Recipe

2 cups of split peas
ham bone
1- 2 bay leaves
2 cloves of garlic (minced)
1 onion (chopped)
1/4 tsp thyme
2 or 3 large carrots (chopped)
2 stalks of celery (chopped)
salt and pepper to taste


Dumplings:
1.5 cups of flour
2 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
3 Tbsp shortening
3/4 cup milk

Soup:
1. Soak peas overnight in 4 cups of water
2. Drain water from soaked peas.
3. Put drained peas back in pot and add 6 cups of water
4. Add ham bone and bay leaves
5. Bring to boil
6. Reduce to low and cover with lid
7. Cook for 1.5 hours
8. Add garlics, onion, thyme, carrots, celery, salt and pepper.
9. Cook until vegetables are soft (approx. 30 mins)
10. Take ham bone out and let cool.
11. Take all meat off the bone and chop in bite sized piece and return meat to soup.

Dumplings:
1. Whisk together flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl.
2. Cut in shortening with knife or pastry blender until it resembles fine crumbs
3. Stir in milk until moistened (Dough will be lumpy- be sure not to over mix)

To Add Dumplings to Soup:
1. Drop by large spoonful and add to the top of soup.
2. Cook uncovered for 10 mins
3. Cover and cook another 10 mins
