2 lbs. roasted chopped almonds
2 lbs. roasted chopped walnuts
2 lbs. figs (or 1 pkg dark soft dried fig and 1 pkg. calmyrna white)
1 lb. dates
1 lb. raisins golden
1 lb. peaches or pears - soft dried
1 lb. honey
1 lb. orange marmalade
1 1/2 cups Sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
3 cups water
1 cup brandy
2 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
2 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
2 tsp. all spice
2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. salt

Dough:
5 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. orange zest (grated)
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup shortening (lard, Crisco or butter)
3 Tbsp. of milk (if needed)

Icing:
3 cups powdered sugar
2 Tbsp. butter
5 Tbsp. milk

For Filling:
Grind figs (cut knob off of figs, dates, raisins and peaches together
Stir all other ingredients for the filing in a bowl and add grounded mixture
Cover bowl and refrigerate over night

For Dough:
Add shortening to flour (cut it in) & then add one egg at a time
Add the remaining dry ingredients and zest, mix well. Take out of bowl and knead until smooth on a floured board (if dough is too soft add more flour, if dough is too hard add a little milk) Split dough and wrap dough in plastic and chill for 1 hour.

Keep dough refrigerated until ready to roll. Roll dough out and cut into strips 10 in. x 3 in. wide. Place a strip of filling down the center of each dough strip. Fold sides over to cover filling (inward). Seal seam with water on your finger, pinch close and press lightly down. Turn over (seam down) and cut 1 1/2 in - 2 inch wide using a floured knife (cut vertical). Place seam side down on buttered pan 1/2 inch apart and bake.

Bake at 350 18-19 minutes or until light brown - Remove from oven and transfer cookies to a rack. Ice cookies when warm.

For Icing:
Cream powdered sugar and butter together add milk until smooth.
Frost cookies with a knife and sprinkle with multi-color nonpareils

These cookies remind me of my Mom. I remember her teaching all of us how to make them and they had to be done just the right way. It was one of the last things we made together....such a great memory!
