1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
2 cups sifted enriched flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 (6 oz.) pkg (1 cup) pitted dates, cut up or 1 cup seedless raisins
1/2 cup chopped California walnuts

Directions:

Cream together shortening, sugar and vanilla. Add eggs, beating well. Sift together dry ingredients; stir into creamed mixture. Add dates and nuts. Divide in 4 portions On greased cookie sheets, spread each in 12 x 2 1/2 x 1/2 inch strings (about 3 inches apart). Bake in moderate oven 375º about 15 minutes or until lightly browned. While warm, cut diagonally in bars, remove to rack. Sprinkle with confectioners sugar.
