1/2 c shortening
1 1/2 c sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp butter flavoring
1 oz red food coloring
3 Tbsp cocoa
2 1/2 c sifted flour
1 c buttermilk
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 Tbsp vinegar

Frosting:
3 Tbsp flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 c milk
1 c shortening
1 c sugar
2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp butter flavoring

Chopped pecan tor topping
Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º.
Grease and flour 3 9” or 10” round cake pans.
Cake:
Cream: shortening, sugar, eggs and flavorings.
Make paste of cocoa and food coloring in small bowl and then add it to creamed mixture.
Alternately add flour and buttermilk to the mixture. Mix soda and vinegar in small bowl and then add to the batter mix and blend in well.
Divide evenly between the 3 pans, bake 20-25 minutes. Cool and then frost
Frosting:
Cook milk, flour, and salt until thick, stirring constantly. Let cool.
Cream shortening and sugar very well and then add flavors and mix well. Combine this with the cooled mixture and beat well.
Frost and then garnish cake with chopped pecan pieces.
