1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup butter or shortening
1 egg
1 1/2 cups pastry flour ( if using all purpose use 3 tbsp less)
1/2 chopped walnuts (optional)
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cup chopped dates (It is easy if you buy chopped dates)
1 cup boiling water
1 tsp soda

Directions:
Directions:
In a separate bowl pour boiling water over chopped dates and soda. Stir and cool.
Pre- heat oven to 325' Prepare parchment lined loaf pan, grease well.

In large bowl: Blend sugar, butter, add egg mix well. Add soaked dates. Mix.
Blend flour, salt, walnuts and add to date mixture. Add vanilla. Mix.

Bake for approx. an hour. Let cool a few minutes and turn out on cooling rack.

Note: You can bake this in 2 -19 oz greased cans and then cut bottom off and push out.
This gives nice round slices if you are serving at a special occasion.

Granny gave this recipe to me shortly after we were married.
Loaves used to be popular to have on hand for company or for bridal showers and teas.
I remember hers was so moist and good.
