Directions:In large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Rub shortening into the dry ingredients. Mix in beaten egg. Mix in a portion of milk at a time. Consistency will be a thick paste. Mix in raisins.
Grease and flour a 12 x 6 pan. Scrape in the mixture, making sure to spread it to all corners. Bang the pan on the counter a few times to release any air bubbles. With a utensil, draw a line down the center, to prevent excess cracking.
Bake 375 º for 45 minutes for a 12 x 6 pan, or 25 minutes for 8 x 4 loaf pans. |

Notes: This recipe was my grandmother's. I'm sure it was her mother's and back many generations.
When I make this for a crowd, I use my grandmother's oval roasting pan. Sure, it's over 90 years old, and shows some wear. but it's a treasure that brings out the very best.
After several people asked me if the shortening was the size of a medium, large of x-large egg, one day I shaped the Crisco and measured it.
