2 tbsp olive oil
1 large yellow onion - minced
6 garlic cloves - minced
4 cans (24 oz) of tomato sauce (do not use the flavored cans)
4 cans water
Salt
Pepper
1 lb. reduced fat hamburger
4 tbsp sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onion until translucent. Add the garlic and continue sauté for 2 minutes.
Add the tomato sauce then an equal amount of water to the sauce. Increase heat and bring to a boil. Add salt and pepper and hamburger while boiling. Decrease heat until the sauce has a light boil. Add the sugar and stir frequently. Continue to simmer for 3 to 4 hours - stirring frequently. The sauce is ready when the sauce is thick.

Although the sugar sweetens the sauce - you can add additional salt if the sauce tastes bitter.

Personal Notes:
The key to the perfect sauce is to let it simmer for 3 to 4 hours. This is not a sauce that can be rushed. This recipe will make enough to serve a large number of guests and/or jar and freeze for future meals. Making extra sauce allows for everyone to sample prior to dinner - a great memory of dipping fresh bread into the sauce!
