COOKIE DOUGH:
½ c. stick unsalted butter
¾ c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
1 egg yolk (reserve egg white)
½ c. honey
1 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground anise seeds
4 c. all purpose flour
4 tsp baking powder
¼ c. whole milk

COOKIE GLAZE:
1⅓ to 1½ c. confectionery sugar
1 egg white
2 T. fresh lemon juice

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350º
Sift together flour and baking powder. Set aside.
In a mixer bowl, beat butter, sugar, honey and salt until smooth and light.
Add egg and egg yolk, beating well after each addition.
Add vanilla, and all ground spices, mixing well.
Beat in half of the flour and baking powder mixture.
Add the milk, mixing well, then add one more cup of the flour. Sprinkle the remaining flour mixture onto counter and turn dough onto floured surface.
Knead dough, incorporating remaining flour. (If dough is a little sticky, wrap and refrigerate 1-2 hours) Roll out dough to about ¼" thickness.Cut into desired shapes, place about 1 to 1½" apart on parchment lined cookie sheets and bake in preheated 350º oven for about ten minutes.
Cookies should be just lightly golden and still a little soft.
Remove to racks to cool completely.

GLAZE:
Sift confectionery sugar into a bowl. Whisk in egg white and enough lemon juice to make a thick creamy glaze that is not too runny. Brush onto tops of cookies and decorate with assorted sprinkle.
Allow cookies to dry and then store in an airtight container.
