2 cups sifted flour
1 Tb baking powder
3 Tb sugar
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup Crisco shortening
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
butter
strawberries
sugar to taste
whipped cream

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 400º
Sift together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
Using a pastry cutter, blend shortening into sifted ingredients until slightly coarser than yellow corn meal.
Beat egg with fork and pour into a well in the flour and shortening mixture.
Pour in milk and blend everything with a fork.
Drop batter by heaping tablespoonful 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake for 15-20 minutes or until lightly browned.
Set cookie sheet on cake cooling rack.
While hot, break open cakes with fork and add a dab of butter into the center.
Replace tops quickly.
Mash strawberries with sugar to taste.
Spoon strawberries between and on top of shortcakes.
Top with whipped cream.
