2 tbs unsweetened cocoa powder
2 oz red food coloring
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups flour - sifted
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vinegar
1 cup milk
5 tbs flour
1 cup sugar
1 cup butter
1 tsp vanilla

Preheat oven 350º. Grease 9x13 or two 9" round pans. Make a paste of cocoa powder and food coloring - set aside. Combine buttermilk, salt and 1 tsp vanilla and set aside. Cream together shortening, 1 1/2 cups sugar until fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, stir in cocoa mixture. Beat in buttermilk mixture alternately with flour - mix until just incorporated. Stir together soda and vinegar - gently fold into batter. Pour into pans and bake for 30 minutes. Cool completely. Frosting:
in saucepan combine milk and 5 tbs flour. Cook over low heat - stir constantly until mixture thickens. Set aside and cool completely. Cream together butter, 1 cup sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Stir in cooled milk mixture until icing reaches spreading consistency
