Naan (Indian-style flatbread) Recipe

Ingredients: 1 c warm water 1/4 c sugar I pkg (2 1/4 tsp) yeast 2 tsp salt 1 egg, room temperature, lightly beaten 1/4 c plain yogurt or milk 3 1/2- 4 c flour 1/2 c butter 2 large garlic cloves

Directions:Place warm water in a bowl and add sugar. Stir gently and sprinkle in yeast. Let stand 10 min. While yeast is proofing add 3 c flour and salt to stand mixer fitted with dough hook. Add yeast mixture, egg and yogurt or milk. Mix until ut forms a very soft dough; add additional flour if needed but keep dough very soft and sticky to touch. Knead with dough hook for 5 min.
Place in lightly oiled bowl in a warm place and cover with towel. Let rise til nearly double -about 45 min. Punch down and on a lightly floured surface. Form into a mound and divide into 12-14 equal portions. Let them rest while melting butter in a small bowl. Add garlic to butter.
Heat up medium size skillet, grill or panini press. (Skillet over medium heat) Roll each portion slightly thicker than a tortilla about 1/8 inch. Brush with garlic butter and cook on pan for 1-3 min til bubble form on top. Brush other side and flip. Cook until golden brown on both sides. Serve with hummus or use for gyros |
