1 lb. chopped dates
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1/2 to 3/4 cup of hot water
2 tsp. vanilla

1 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup shortening
2 cups oatmeal
1 cup flour
1 tsp. baking soda
pinch of salt

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350

Cook first 4 ingredients together over medium heat till thickened and dates are soft.

Combine brown sugar, shortening, oatmeal, flour, soda and salt together.

Pat half the crumb mixture in to a 9 x 9 pan

Pour date mixture over the crumbs and pat the rest of the crumbs over dates.

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in preheated oven, or until top is lightly toasted. Cool before cutting into squares.
