1¼ cup firmly packed brown sugar
¾ cup shortening or butter
2 tbsp (30 ml) milk
2 tbsp (15 ml) vanilla
1 egg
1¾ cup (425 ml) all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
¾ tsp baking soda
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup pecan pieces (opt.)

Directions:
Directions:
1) Preheat oven 180 ºC (375 ºF).

2) Beat sugar and shortening until creamy. Add egg, milk and vanilla; mix well. Combine flour, salt and baking soda in separate bowl. Incorporate into creamed mixture.

3) Stir in chocolate chips and nuts.

4) Drop dough by rounded tbsps onto ungreased baking sheet about 3 inches apart.

5) Bake one baking sheet at a time at 375 ºF for 8 - 10 mins for chewy cookies. 11 - 13 mins for crisp cookies. Be careful not to overbake.

6) Let cool 2 min on baking sheet, then place on rack to cool completely.
