Crumb mixture

1 1/3 cups all - purpose flour
1/4 tsp. soda
1 3/4 cups oatmeal
1 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup butter

Filling

2 cups chopped dates
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Combine ingredients for filling in a double boiler and cook until thick ,
then cool .
Measure flour , salt , soda , oatmeal , and sugar into a bowl , and add butter
and cream all together with your hands .
Put half of the mixture into a well greased 9 inch pan , and press down .
Add the cool date mixture , spreading over the base mixture evenly .
Sprinkle and pat the remaining oat mixture on top .
Bake at 350 F for 45 minutes or until a golden brown .
Set to cool and cut into squares .
