Grandma Alphas Crispy Sweet Pickles
25-30 small cucumbers
1 cup pickling lime
water to cover cucumbers
2 quarts red cider vinegar
8 cups sugar
2 teaspoons whole cloves
1 teaspoon salt

Directions:
Wash Cucumbers throughly and slice in quarter in slices about three times thicker than sandwich slices.Add lime and water to completely cover the cucumber slices about a gallon. The cucumber slices need to be in a large bowl or pan a crock bowl is what mom always used. Let them set at least 4 hours to overnight.
Next morning or later in the day pour cucumber slices up into the sink and throughly rinse with cold water until there is no traces of white lime . Set the clean cuke slices back into the clean stone bowl and cover with clean cool water and let them set 3 hours. Meantime mix all the vinegar 8 cups sugar 2 teaspoons of cloves and 1 teaspoon of salt in a large kettle. Pour clean well drained cuke slices into the kettle of mixture. Let this set overnight in the kettle. The next morning bring to a boil and cook 35-40 minutes.Fill sterilized jars to within 1/2 in of the top with cucumbers and syrup. Put on the lid and band and tighten firmly tight.Process in hot water bath5 minutes. Makes about 10 pints.

This was my mothers pickle recipe. She loved making these and we all enjoyed eating them. They are really good for potato salad and deviled eggs. Mom wasn't a great cook but she canned many things that were great!
