1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 Tbsp. cocoa
2 oz. red food coloring
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 cups cake flour (if you use all purpose flour, remove 2 T per cup)
1 cup buttermilk
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 Tbsp. white vinegar
1/2 tsp. salt

Icing:
3 Tbsp. flour
1 cup milk
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350.

Cream sugar, eggs, and butter. Make paste with cocoa and red food coloring. Add to mixture. Add vanilla. Sift flour and salt together and add alternately with buttermilk to combined ingredients. Beat 3 minutes. Mix soda and vinegar together and fold into batter. Do not beat anymore. Bake in 2, 9 inch pans at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Icing:
Add 3 T. flour to 1 cup milk. Cook until thick and the consistency of gravy, stir constantly, then cool. May be cooled quickly by spreading out on a plate. Meanwhile, beat 1 cup butter with 1 cup sugar. Beat and scrape, and beat and scrape, and beat until fluffy The granulated part will not go away until you add the flour mixture. After the flour mixture is cooled, add slowly to the sugar mixture and continue to beat and beat. Add t tsp. vanilla. It will look as if curdled but keep beating and don't worry. Cool cake before icing.
