2 C. sifted brown sugar
1/2 C. butter
2 T. cocoa
2 eggs, separated
1 C. milk
2 1/2 C. flour, sifted
1 tsp. soda in 1 T. boiling water
1 tsp. vanilla

FROSTING
3 T. butter, melted
½ C. cocoa
⅓ C. milk
1½ tsp. vanilla
3½ C confectioners sugar

1. Beat egg whites until stiff - set aside.

2. Cream butter, brown sugar, cocoa and egg yolks.

3. Add flour and milk alternately.

4. Add soda and vanilla

5. Fold in beaten egg whites

6. Bake at 375º for 25 min. in 2 - 9" pans.

This was Gramps's favorite birthday cake. In the McMichael family, it was "Birthday Cake." It is a tad dry, so be sure to make the frosting to go with it.
