2 C flour
1 C milk
4 tsp. baking powder
2 Tbs. shortening
½ tsp. salt

Directions:
Directions:
Stir flour, baking powder, and salt. Work in shortening with pastry blender. Gradually add milk and mix to a soft dough. Drop spoonfuls onto hot broth, soup or stew, allowing space for dumplings to rise. Cover pot and boil for 12-14 mins. For best results, use a glass lid so you can monitor them and do not lift cover until they are fully cooked. Serve hot.

For an added treat, mix in minced pieces of meat or vegetables, and seasonings, before dropping into the pot.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
I loved hearing stories of what it was like for our grandparents and great grandparents. One such story was of dropped dumplings. I was told of poor times when even potatoes were scarce, and how many used dumplings to take their place. In later, more prosperous years, leftover pieces of chicken, beef, and other meats were added, along with vegetables and seasonings for a special treat.
