¾ cup soft shortening (part butter)
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla or lemon flavoring
2½ cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt

EGG YOLK PAINT: 1 egg yolk, ¼ tsp water, food coloring. If paint thickens on standing add a few drops of water.

Mix well shortening, sugar, egg, flavoring. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and stir in. Chill at least one hour. heat over to 400º. Roll out ¼ fo dough at a time, ⅛" thick, on a lightly floured board. Keep rest of dough chilled. Cu tin desired shapes. Place on ungreased baking sheet. paint with Egg Yolk Paint.* Bake 6-8 minutes, until set but not brown.

Aunt Linda and Aunt Nancy, and I used to walk to Great-Grandma's house, paint brushes in hand, to decorate Christmas cookies. *The recipe says to paint them before baking, but this is not how I recall doing it. If you paint before baking, be sure to thoroughly thin the egg yolk mixture or a heavy-handed decorator will make a mess of raw cookie dough.).
