2 c. Flour
2 c. Sugar
Stick butter (1/2 cup)
1/2 c. Shortening
1 c. Strong brewed coffee or water
1/4 c. Dark cocoa
1/2 c. Buttermilk (2 tsp. vinegar or lemon juice in 1/2 c. milk)
2 eggs
1 tsp. Baking soda
1 tsp. Vanilla

Frosting:
1/2 c. Butter
1/4 c. Dark cocoa
1/4 c. Milk
4 c.10xx sugar
1 tsp. Vanilla

Set oven at 400º
In large bowl combine flour and sugar.
In heavy saucepan, combine butter, shortening, coffee and cocoa. Stir and heat to boiling.
Pour boiling mixture over sugar/flour mixture. Add buttermilk, eggs, soda and vanilla. Mix well by hand.
Pour into a well buttered 17 1/2 by 11 jelly roll pan.
Bake for 20 min. or until brownies test done in center.
While brownies bake, prepare frosting. In saucepan, combine all ingredients except sugar. Heat to boiling, stirring.
Mix in sugar and vanilla until smooth. Add nuts, if desired.
Pour frosting over brownies as soon as you take them out of oven.
Cool and cut into 48 bars.
