2 cups Dates, cut up
1 cup Walnuts, broken
1 cup Boiling water
¼ cup Shortening
¾ cup Brown sugar
2 cup Cake flour
½ tsp. Salt
1 Egg
1 tsp. Baking soda

Directions:
Directions:
Pour boiling water over dates and nuts and let stand. Put shortening in bowl and start mixer (low speed). Pour sugar slowly on shortening, cream well. Break eggs into bowl and mix. Do the rest by hand. Now add baking soda to dates and nuts. Not sooner they turn red. Measure flour and salt, swift twice. Stir in flour and fruit mixture alternately into wet mix, but gently. Mix well, then stir in ⅓ cup of cold water. Pour into greased bread pan. Bake for 45 minutes at 350º. Test with toothpick.
