Grandma Koplowitz is a memory to me for many reasons, but namely it's where I began to hear words of wisdom expressed in a way that made me remember tips that I felt compelled to listen to and apply to my life. I remember her saying, "Everything has its place and everything in its place". It was years later that I learned that the tip was about organization and being organized!

Other family members and friends share words of wisdom and to this day, I find myself thinking about those things...like:
"Early to Bed, Early to Rise, makes a man Healthy, Wealthy and Wise"
"What Comes around, Goes Around"
"Never step out, without your lipstick on"
"Make sure that you always have a dime in your pocket for a phone call"
"If you borrow something, return it, no matter how insignificant"
"Remember to say Please and Thank You"
"Think before you Speak"
"Honesty is the best Policy"
"You get more with honey than vinegar"
"A watched pot never boils"
"Always wear clean underwear, you never know when you'll be in an accident"!
"Situations are grey, not black and white"

I think that our values are often defined by the influences we have in our lives. We only need to be curious, listen, and ask questions to those persons who we value.

Grandma lost her leg in an accident in the '60's while on vacation. When I began to understand how challenging the depths of that pain must have been, I realized that life throws us those challenges in indiscriminate ways and how we handle them often defines our character. It was grandma that let us touch her prosthetic leg, help her get in the pool and openly discuss her feelings about that experience. Her candor had a profound impact on me and I will always appreciate aging, the challenges it presents and the importance of how we handle our personal situations.
